Miracles, Magic & More

According to Collins’ Concise Dictionary, a miracle is “an event contrary to the laws of nature, and attributed to a supernatural cause”, therefore it is “… any amazing or wonderful event.” Most people, in harmony with the Collins definition, use the phrase “It’s a miracle!” when something happens that they regard as an “amazing or wonderful event”, something that they thought was impossible or incapable of happening.

However, it is not possible for any event to be “supernatural or contrary to the laws of nature”.
Metaphysics (the study of the non-physical or of what is beyond the physical) suggests quite logically that nothing supernatural exists other than That which created nature. Throughout history, scientists have devoted themselves to proving that “amazing or wonderful events” can be caused only by the laws of nature, never in defiance of them.
What is more, every art form, whether it be painting, writing, music, dance, architecture or design, requires creative freedom within the boundaries of formal rules.

As the Collins definition requires a belief in the supernatural it is based on illusion, and therefore not on any science that can be practised nor any art that can be developed. Since science and art are the two great pillars that support human society, the Collins definition should be disregarded in the context of this article.
A rather different definition – the exact opposite, in fact - is found in the set of books entitled A Course in Miracles. It says: “A miracle is an act of love between brothers” (the word “brothers” meaning all fellow-beings). Con-tinuing its contrast to Collins, it adds: “Miracles are natural. If you are not experiencing them something has gone wrong”.

My own definition is “A miracle is a manifestation of faith.” This definition implies a direct connection between oneself and the Creator of the Universe (i.e. God). It arises from forty years of studying and teaching Psychodynamics (the laws that govern mental action) and Menticulture (the scientific cultivation of mind power). During this time I learned that the average person uses the word miracle to mean a manifestation of faith on the part of one or more persons. It is the coming about of an event that someone did believe possible regardless of all contrary opinions and of all attendant evidence suggesting it could not occur.

Many of this planet’s seven billion humans are not enjoying miracles, or acts of love, as a natural way of life. Many of us, in fact, are not experiencing miracles in terms of any definition above. Yet, since A Course in Miracles says “Miracles are natural” perhaps the art of creating them has been crushed this last century under the increasing mass production of heavy machinery, plastic toys, electronic devices and, indeed, of human beings themselves.

The art of Miracle Creation integrates three aspects: the formal rules of Psychodynamics, the practice of Menticulture and the Spiritual principles that underlie all life yet grant us our individual uniqueness. My website will shortly feature a book called “The Art of Creating Miracles.” You are encouraged to employ the rules and spiritual principles recorded therein in regular daily practice sessions. Keep a journal from the outset in which to record your understandings, thoughts, insights and experiences so that you may validate every aspect of the programme.

Essentially, you will learn how to live a rich and rewarding life on an ongoing daily and practical level. You will receive a sound understanding of the art of miracle creation, as well as a written record of your progress and successful use of the skills and attitudes taught. In short, you will know how to tap into your innate spiritual wisdom to overcome every problem, meet every challenge, and create love, health and prosperity for yourself and others.

The full symphony of your real self only can be heard when all the windows of your mind are open to the fullness of life.”
– Raymond Charles Barker
